Brain stretching is a concept that involves stretching and reshaping the way we think, or how we were taught to think, and using the new information that results to solve problems and improve our mind’s ability to adapt to new challenges. Brain stretching is used by project manages, team leaders and other people in management to get their staff to break out from routing thinking patterns and challenge themselves to find new and creative ways to deal with problems.
Brain stretching is another form of brain training, exercises developed to help strengthen the mind, sharpen the brain’s ability to function clearly and improve memory and cognitive skills. There are many ways to encourage brain stretching and the more you practice brain training exercises the more open your mind becomes to new ways of thinking and problem solving.
Many of us get used to patterns and routines. If a method works we tend to stick with it until it fails us. But this habit can be counter-productive since it doesn’t encourage us to seek out new solutions that may be better in the long run than the method we have been using. Brain stretching is all about forcing ourselves to think in ways we wouldn’t have thought before and then applying this new knowledge to problems we encounter at work, at home and during every day life.
Games, including puzzles, riddles and brain teasers are excellent ways to force the brain to stretch and figure out solutions. Math problems are another way people train their brains to stretch and be creative when trying to solve algebra, calculus and geometry equations. Another way to encourage brain stretching when playing brain training games is to take away the obvious solution, or the most popular, and force the player to come up with an alternative solution. This tactic leaves the game player with no choice but to figure out another way a problem can be solved. There is always more than one answer.
